Distributor: Service and Repair
Distributor (Typical) - Exploded View:
REMOVAL
1. Remove distributor cap, moving the cap and wires aside to allow access to the distributor.
2. Disconnect distributor electrical connection.
NOTE: To disconnect module connector, push on connector where it says PUSH and slide connector from module.
3. Mark rotor position on distributor and remove.
4. Remove distributor hold down bolt and clamp.
5. Remove distributor from the engine.
INSPECTION
Visually inspect distributor. Check for the following:
- Drive gear free of nicks, cracks, and excessive wear.
- Distributor shaft should rotate freely, without binding.
INSTALLATION
1. Replace distributor "O" ring.
2. Install distributor in engine, aligning marks from REMOVAL STEP 3. Install distributor hold down clamp and lightly tighten bolt.
3. Connect distributor electrical connector. Install rotor and distributor cap.
- Tighten the screws to 18-23 lb. in. (2.0-2.6 N-m).
3. Disconnect SPOUT connector, START engine, and adjust ignition timing to 10 degrees BTDC.
- Tighten the distributor hold down bolt to 17-25 lb. ft. (23-34 N-m).
4. Connect the SPOUT connector.
