Suspension Control ( Automatic - Electronic ): Description and Operation
PURPOSEWith the Programmable Ride Control System, the driver may use a Ride Select Switch to select either a constantly firm ride or an automatically adjustable ride.
OPERATION
The Programmable Ride Control System is activated with the Ignition Switch in "RUN". The Automatic Shock Control Module changes suspension tuning by energizing either the Hard Ride Relay or Soft Ride Relay. These relays control four shock actuators which change the damping rate to firm or soft by rotating a valve inside the shock absorber. They also provide a feedback signal to the control module indicating shock absorber mode.
With the Ride Select Switch in the FIRM position, the Automatic Shock Control Module adjusts shock absorber damping. providing a constantly firm (sport) suspension tuning.
When the Ride Select Switch is in the AUTO position, the Automatic Shock Control Module adjusts shock absorber damping, providing a soft (plush) ride during normal driving conditions.
The suspension changes instantly to "FIRM" (by the control module) during hard braking, acceleration, cornering, and at high speed for improved handling.
The change from "AUTO" to "FIRM" occurs when any of the following conditions are met:
- Brake Pressure is above 400 psi.
- Throttle position is greater than 90% of full throttle.
- Steering wheel angle is greater than approximately 0.35g of lateral acceleration.
- Vehicle speed is greater than 90 mph.
The Firm Ride Indicator lamp illuminates whenever the suspension is in the FIRM mode, and is automatically dimmed by the Automatic Shock Control Module whenever the lights are turned on.
The indicator lamp flashes on and off if a malfunction is detected.
