AIR CONDITIONING - HIGH HEAD PRESSURE AT ENGINE IDLE - INSUFFICIENT COOLING

FORD: 1993 THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1993 COUGAR

ISSUE:
High air conditioning head pressure and insufficient cooling at engine idle may be caused by a Fascia mounted lower air deflector sag between the shroud and the tie bar. This reduces the deflector's effectiveness.

ACTION:
Rework the lower air deflector. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Remove the two (2) fasteners located on the air deflector tabs and save them.

2. Cut across both tabs, along the centerline of the existing hole, and discard the trimmed material. See Figure 1.

3. Extend the cuts that form the tabs an additional 35 mm.

4. Punch two (2) new holes in the tabs, 45 mm from the centerline of the old holes, Figure 1.

5. Use the original fasteners (removed in Step 1) and install the deflector in the vehicle as shown in Figure 2. When installed correctly, the deflector is located above the tie bar and extends past the bar horizontally.
