Article No.

^ NOISE - "CLUNK" FROM REAR END DURING TURNING MANEUVERS

^ REAR WHEEL BEARING NUT-NOT TORQUED TO SPECIFICATION AND/OR NOISY

FORD:
1991-94 THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1991-94 COUGAR

ISSUE:
Customer concerns of rear wheel bearing noise, "clunk" or looseness of the rear tire/wheel assembly may be caused by insufficient installation torque on the rear axle wheel hub retainer nut. The noise concerns may be more noticeable in turns or as vehicle speed increases. The nut will not disassemble itself.

ACTION:
Check the "breakaway on" torque using a torque wrench. If torque is less than the specification, 255-345 N-m (188-254 lb.ft.), replace the rear axle wheel hub retainer nut (pacnut), hub, bearing, knuckle and halfshaft outboard joint. If torque is greater than 255-345 N-m (188-254 lb.ft.), replace the pacnut with a new one and retighten to specification. If rear suspension still is noisy and/or loose, check for other causes.

1. Refer to the appropriate model year Service Manual, Section 04-02, for servicing the pacnut, hub, bearing and knuckle.

2. Refer to the appropriate model year Service Manual, Section 05-05, for servicing the halfshaft outboard joint.
