SHEET METAL - FENDERS AND DECKLIDS - ALUMINUM BODY PARTS - RETROFIT PROCEDURE
LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1992-93 SABLE
ISSUE:
Aluminum fenders and decklids were installed at the time of vehicle assembly on some 1992 and 1993 Sables.
^ Twenty (20) 1992 Sables built at the Atlanta Assembly Plant during the weeks of 7/13/92 and 7/20/92.
^ Seventy three (73) 1993 Sables built at the Chicago Assembly Plant during the week of 11/2/92.
The aluminum parts will not be available for service replacement. If service replacement is required, production steel sheet metal parts must be used.
ACTION:
When repairing aluminum panels, use the following aluminum repair techniques.
REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE FOR FENDERS
The replacement procedure for aluminum fenders is the same as for steel sheet metal.
RETROFIT PROCEDURE FOR DECKLID:
The replacement procedure for the decklid is the same as for steel sheet metal with one exception. Due to the weight difference, the torsion bars must be replaced with regular production torsion bars (F24Y-5444890-A and F24Y-5444891-A).
METAL PANEL REPAIR PROCEDURE
When refinishing with aluminum parts, use 3M's P180 Aluminum Oxide Mylar-backed abrasive discs on a 5" random orbital sander.
