COOLING SYSTEM - LEAKS - COOLANT BY-PASS HOSE LEAKS
FORD:
1991-94 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1991-94 SABLE
ISSUE:
Customers may complain of loss of engine coolant. This may be caused by early wear-out of the coolant by-pass hose, due to the material of the by-pass hose.
ACTION:
Replace the coolant by-pass hose with a service replacement hose made of an improved material. The revised hose will provide improved life. Refer to the following for the appropriate service procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Open the hood and place fender covers.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable.
WARNING:
THE ENGINE RADIATOR ELECTRIC FAN MAY COME ON AT ANY TIME WITHOUT WARNING EVEN IF THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING. DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE BEFORE SERVICING.
3. Position drain pan below radiator.
4. Remove radiator cap and open radiator draincock to drain coolant from radiator.
WARNING:
NEVER REMOVE THE RADIATOR CAP UNDER ANY CONDITION WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE COOLING SYSTEM AND/OR PERSONAL INJURY. TO AVOID HAVING SCALDING HOT COOLANT OR STEAM BLOW OUT OF THE RADIATOR, USE EXTREME CARE WHEN REMOVING THE RADIATOR CAP FROM A HOT RADIATOR. WAIT UNTIL THE ENGINE HAS COOLED, THEN WRAP A THICK CLOTH AROUND THE RADIATOR CAP AND TURN IT SLOWLY TO THE FIRST STOP. STEP BACK WHILE THE PRESSURE IS RELEASED FROM THE COOLING SYSTEM. WHEN CERTAIN ALL THE PRESSURE HAS BEEN RELEASED, PRESS DOWN ON THE RADIATOR CAP (STILL WITH A CLOTH), TURN AND REMOVE IT.
5. Cut the crimped aluminum band which secures the heater by-pass hose to the steel tube assembly. Refer to Figure 1.
CAUTION:
CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT THE STEEL TUBE IS NOT DAMAGED. A MINI HACK SAW OR HACK SAW BLADE WITH AN ATTACHED HANDLE SHOULD BE USED.
6. Disconnect the lower end of the heater by-pass hose from the engine nipple. Discard the constant tension clamp.
7. Place the new hose clamps (376240-S100, or equivalent) on the new by-pass hose (F4DZ-18472-A).
8. Install the by-pass hose on the engine nipple and by-pass tube.
9. Position the hose clamps past the upset bead on both the by-pass tube and the engine nipple.
10. Tighten the hose clamps to 15-21 lbs.in. (1.7-2.4 N-m).
11. Close the radiator draincock.
12. Fill the cooling system with the specified cooling system concentrate and water solution. Refer to the Owner's Guide for specific details.
13. Connect the negative battery cable.
14. Start the engine and check for leaks.
15. Check coolant level as required.
16. Remove fender covers and close hood.
