LIFTGATE - REMOTE RELEASE - INSTALLATION PROCEDURE - JOB # 1 STATION WAGONS WITH POWER DOOR LOCK GROUP OPTION ONLY

FORD:
1993 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1993 SABLE

ISSUE:
Job # 1, 1993 Taurus/Sable station wagons could not be built with a remote release liftgate because the required latch assembly was not available. Now that the remote release liftgate latch is available, the earlier built vehicles can be retrofitted to include the remote release liftgate feature at the customer's expense.

ACTION:
Use the following procedure to retrofit early built vehicles with the remote release liftgate feature. Upgrades are to be done only at the customer's request and at the customer's expense.

On most vehicles the procedure will be relatively simple, requiring only a substitution of latch assembly, striker, remote control and latch mounting screws. Low series GL Taurus wagons require several additional parts. Some vehicles may require some additional wiring and a relay.

1. Remove and replace the latch and retaining screws (N807617-S100), Figure 1. Tighten to 7-11 N-m (5-8 Lb.Ft.).

a. Reconnect the motor and door ajar switch.

b. Install a new harness if required, see Figure 2.

2. Remove and replace the striker (F3DZ-74404A42-A), Figure 3. Tighten to 27-38 N-m (20-28 Lb.Ft.).

3. Remove the fuel lever assembly, Figure 4.

a. Replace with liftgate release/fuel lever release combination assembly (F3DZ-7443150-B).

b. Connect the wiring, Figure 5.

4. Check for presence of relay behind right rear trim panel, Figure 2. Install new relay (FOAZ-14N089-B), if necessary.

5. Reprogram remote keyless entry module if equipped. Replace the 3-button transmitter with the 4-button transmitter (F4DZ-15K601-A). Two (2) required per vehicle.

REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY PROGRAM PROCEDURE

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON position.

2. Momentarily, short the two terminals in the 2-pin "Program Connector", Figure 6. All doors will lock and unlock.

3. Press any button on the transmitter. All doors will lock and unlock.

4. Repeat Step 3 to program additional transmitters (4 Maximum) into the module.

5. Turn the ignition OFF.

After completing the remote liftgate release installation, go through the following checklist to be sure the vehicle is completely functional and satisfactory to the customer.

FUNCTION CHECK LIST

1. Confirm the remote keyless entry function (lock, unlock, panic, liftgate release) at 15 feet (4.6 m) from the vehicle.

2. On remote keyless units, verify that the keyless module is reinstalled properly after the shorting plug has been used to reprogram the correct transmitter to the vehicle. On units with an amplifier in the rear...

a. Remove the amplifier first to allow removal of the remote keyless module.

b. Function the radio system to be sure it is working properly.

3. Verify that the heated backlight glass option functions.

4. Confirm that the rear wiper/washer functions.

5. Verify that the door and/or liftgate ajar lights functions and that they DO NOT function after the doors and liftgate have been closed. (The ignition key must be in the ON position.)

6. Confirm that the tail lamp wiring and the power supply floor wiring are not pinched/trapped under the remote housing mechanism once it has been replaced.

7. Verify that the cargo lights function properly and that the mercury switch mounted to the inner tailgate skin has not been distorted/bent in any way so as not to cause erratic operation of the cargo lamp system.

NOTE:
THIS MUST BE DONE WITH THE IGNITION KEY OFF WHILE OPENING THE LIFTGATE TO ASSURE THAT THE SYSTEM IS WORKING PROPERLY. PUSHING THE CARGO LAMP SWITCHES SHOULD EITHER TURN ON OR OFF THE LAMP DEPENDING ON THE POSITION OF THE SWITCH. WITH THE IGNITION KEY ON AND THE TAILGATE OPEN, THE LAMPS SHOULD ALWAYS BE LIT.

8. Confirm that the license lamp sockets are fully seated to the lamp sockets and functionally check them by turning on the headlamp switch.

9. Verify that the electric liftgate system works properly. If the unit is equipped with the remote keyless feature, be sure the remote transmitter has 4 buttons and that depressing the trunk button opens the liftgate.

10. Confirm that the remote gas door release cable is properly attached to the control box and the box is properly secured. Function the gas door release.

11. Verify that the P.I.A. locator on the right side tailgate wiring is installed into the hole in the inner flange of the gate to prevent any rattles.

12. Verify that no loose stock is in the liftgate and perform a static check on the liftgate for squeaks and rattles by shaking the door and listening.

13. Check striker torque, 27-38 N-m (20-28 Lb.Ft.), and setting for the liftgate fit and effort.

14. Check rear lamps to liftgate margin and flushness.

15. Check fit and flushness on all interior carpet, mouldings and parts.

16. If removal was required, check that the seat belt is not twisted after installation.

17. Confirm that there are no chips and scratches on the liftgate, left front door and quarter panel where work has been done.

18. When using the liftgate release lever, the liftgate can only be opened when the transaxle gearshift is in the PARK position and the ignition key is in the ON position.

NOTE:
THE TIME NEEDED TO RETROFIT EARLY BUILT VEHICLES WITH THE REMOTE RELEASE LIFTGATE FEATURE IS ABOUT 1.5 HOURS.
