Fuel Filler Door - Does Not Open Far Enough

DOOR - FUEL FILLER - DOES NOT OPEN FAR ENOUGH WHEN RELEASE LEVER IS ACTIVATED

FORD:
1992-93 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1992-93 SABLE

ISSUE:
The fuel filler door may not open far enough after the release lever is activated because the fuel filler door assist spring is weak.

ACTION:
Replace the fuel filler door assist spring assembly. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

NOTE:
IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE LATCH ASSEMBLY IF THE FUEL FILLER DOOR SPRING IS FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE.

1. Open the fuel filler door and remove the fuel filler door assist spring assembly. Refer to the 1993 Taurus/Sable Service Manual, Section 01-14a, for the removal procedure.

2. Install a new level fuel filler door assist spring assembly (F4DZ-5428608-A). Tighten the screw to 2.7-3.7 N-m (24-32 lb.in.).
