AFFECTED VEHICLES

Certain 1993 and 1994 Taurus (except flex-fuel), Sable and Continental cars built from December 1, 1992 through October 8, 1993.

REASON FOR THIS PROGRAM

Fuel pump components on some of these cars may experience premature wear. This condition is caused by excess amounts of metallic weld spatter contaminants (from tank manufacturing process) remaining in the fuel tank and entering the fuel pump. The effect on vehicle operation may include one or a combination of the following driveability symptoms:

Lack of power/fuel starvation, resulting in hesitation, stumbling and/or stalling in hot weather, above 90 degrees F (or warm weather in the spring or fall when high volatility "winter gasoline" is available).

Stalls at low vehicle speed or idling in high ambient temperatures above 90 degrees F and/or at high altitudes.

No start condition after stalling or shortly after an extended drive in hot weather above 90 degrees F.

SERVICE ACTION

To correct this condition, the fuel tank is to be flushed with water and the fuel pump/sender and in-line fuel filter replaced.

REFUNDS
Only for owner-paid repairs made before the date of the Owner Letter or after the date of the Owner Letter if an emergency repair was made away from the selling dealer.
