ISSUE:
Engine oil or combustion by-products (sludge) may collect in the air cleaner tray. The customer may notice the concern in one or both of the following ways.
^ Oily sludge may be noticed in the bottom of the air cleaner tray during an air cleaner inspection.
^ An engine oil leak may be noticed around the engine air cleaner or transaxle area.
This is caused by insufficient balance of pressure between the engine and air cleaner tray. The condition will typically occur during conditions of high engine loading such as long distance highway travel.
ACTION:
Diagnose and, if necessary, install a new PCV valve (F33Z-6A666-A) which has a greater flow rate to properly balance the pressure between the engine and air cleaner tray. Refer to the following diagnosis and service procedure for details.
1. Refer to the Powertrain Control Emissions Diagnosis Car/Truck Service Manual, Section 14A, for Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) System.
2. Check the PCV valve for plugging or restriction.
3. Check the PCV hose routing and connections for restriction (pinched hose).
4. If engine oil or combustion by-products have been collecting in the air cleaner tray, remove and replace the PCV valve (F33Z-6A666-A).
5. Clean the inside of the air cleaner tray.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
