LEAK - OIL LEAK FROM OIL LEVEL INDICATOR TUBE AND/OR ENGINE GASKETS IN AMBIENT TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW -23 DEGREES C (-10 DEGREES F)-2.3L VEHICLES

ISSUE:
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve may freeze at ambient temperatures at or below -23°C (-10°F). This may result in the PCV valve plugging which could result in engine oil being forced out of the oil level indicator tube and/or other engine gaskets. This condition may occur during extended periods of highway travel.
ACTION:
Refer to the following Service Procedure to diagnose and modify the PCV system as required. The modification should reduce the possibility of PCV valve freeze up.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Perform diagnostic procedures to verify any signs of oil leaks having occurred or occurring through the oil level indicator tube, any sealing area of the crankcase and/or within the steel PCV vacuum fitting located in the intake manifold. Moisture or ice within the air cleaner box may also indicate that a reverse flow has occurred resulting from a restriction in the PCV system.
If a PCV valve freeze up condition has been verified, install a PCV Modification Kit. Refer to Instruction Sheet 8190 or 8191, included in the kit, for installation procedures.
NOTE:
FOR VEHICLES BUILT FROM 5/31/89 AT OAKVILLE AND 6/29/89 AT KANSAS CITY THROUGH THE END OF THE 1989 MODEL YEAR THAT HAVE DEALER-INSTALLED AFTERMARKET AIR CONDITIONING, REFER TO FIGURE 1 TO DETERMINE WHICH TWO (2) HEATER HOSES ARE PRESENT ON THE VEHICLE. AFTER DETERMINING WHICH HOSES ARE REQUIRED, CONTACT RENKIM CORPORATION AT 1-800-325-5621. BE PREPARED TO PROVIDE THE VIN, DEALER P & A CODE, SHIPPING ADDRESS, NAME OF PERSON TO RECEIVE PARTS AND THE DEALERSHIP NAME AND ADDRESS. BE SURE TO GIVE THE LETTER CODES FROM FIGURE 1 FOR THE TWO (2) HOSES REQUIRED. RENKIM WILL PROVIDE A COMPLETE KIT OF PARTS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE INSTALLATION.
