Component Tests and General Diagnostics

O 1. On rear wheel drive models, raise and support rear of vehicle using jack stands on each side of the axle, then block front wheels. Never attempt to use the vehicle bumper jack when performing this test.
2. On front wheel drive models, place jack stands under lower control arm assemblies in order to keep halfshafts in a lateral position, then block rear wheels. Never attempt to use the vehicle bumper jack when performing this test.
3. On all models except Escort and Tracer, start engine, then shift transmission to D.
4. On Escort and Tracer models w/automatic transaxle, start engine, then shift transmission to overdrive.
5. On Escort and Tracer models w/manual transaxle, start engine, then shift transmission to fourth gear.
6. On all models, turn speed control system On. If any time during the following steps the system should appear to go out of control and overspeed, be prepared to turn speed control system off at once using the speed control system OFF button or ignition switch.
7. Accelerate and hold at 35 mph.
8. Press and release SET ACCEL button. Hold foot pressure very lightly on accelerator pedal. Speed should continue at 35 mph for a short period of time, then gradually start to surge due to lack of engine load.
9. Press OFF button, engine should decelerate to idle. Stop drive wheels with service brakes.
10. Press ON button, accelerate and hold speed at 35 mph.
11. Press and hold SET ACCEL button, then slowly remove foot from accelerator. Engine RPM should gradually increase.
12. When speed reaches 50 mph, release SET ACCEL button. Vehicle speed should stay at 50 mph for a short time before surging begins.
13. Press COAST button and hold, engine should return to idle speed. Slow drive wheels to 35 mph.
14. Release COAST button, speed should set at 35 mph and surging should soon start.
15. Press and release brake pedal. Speed control system should shutoff and engine speed should decelerate to idle.
16. Set speed at 50 mph, then using brakes, decelerate to 35 mph, maintain speed using the accelerator. Depress and release RESUME button, speed should return to 50 mph.
