TRANSAXLE - ATX (FLC) - INTERMITTENT NO 1-2 UPSHIFT OR DELAYED 1-2 UPSHIFT

FORD:
1987-90 ESCORT, TAURUS
1987-93 TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1987 LYNX
1987-93 TOPAZ

ISSUE:
There may be an intermittent no 1-2 upshift or a delayed 1-2 upshift. This usually occurs during the initial drive away from extended parking. The transaxle performs normally for some time, after it warms up. The technician may be unable to verify the symptom and the customer may be unable to demonstrate the concern at will. This condition is caused by the TV modulator spring turning around in the 1-2 shift bore.

ACTION:
Install a new TV modulator spring retainer plate which has a dimple on the retainer to keep the spring from turning around in the 1-2 shift bore. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Remove the components (except valve) from the 1-2 shift bore, Figure 1.

a. Remove the outside plug, valve and spring.

b. Plug or cover the end of the bore before removing the old retainer plate because the spring is compressed against the plate.

2. With the valve and spring installed, compress the spring slightly with a thin bladed screwdriver.

a. While compressing the spring, slide the new TV modulator spring retainer plate (F23Z-7F194-A) down into position, Figure 1. The retainer plate has a narrow screwdriver access slot and small centered bump.

b. Install with the narrow slot going over the screwdriver and the bump going into the spring.

3. Install the spring, valve, plug and retainer into the bore.

4. During in-vehicle main control installation, be sure to properly align the valve body and gasket to the case.

a. There is a new shorter Valve Body Alignment Pin T94P-77100-A. Use the new alignment pin in the hole closest to the manual lever area.

b. Use Valve Body Guide Pins T80L-77100-A in the hole diagonally opposite on the valve body. This allows both pins to remain installed in the case holes while the manual valve linkage is attached, main control assembly is placed over pins and seated down onto the case gasket.

5. Complete the main control assembly installation by tightening the main control assembly retaining bolts 72 to 82 lb.in. (8.1 to 9.3 N-m). Tighten in the sequence shown in the Service Manual.
