Fuel Filter: Description and Operation
Fuel System Components:
PURPOSE
Clean fuel is extremely important in a fuel injection system. The filter traps dirt or contaminants before reaching the small orifice in the fuel injector tip. The fuel handling components are protected by two fuel filters and a non-servicable fuel injector screen.
OPERATION
When fuel is delivered from the fuel tank to the fuel injectors by the fuel pump. the fuel passes through the fuel filter which traps contaminants keeping them from entering the fuel system and clogging the fuel injectors, lines or fuel regulator.
In-Line
A replaceable fuel filter is located inside the engine compartment in-line between the fuel tank and fuel injection supply manifold.
NOTE: The fuel filter is a one-piece construction which cannot be cleaned. If the fuel filter becomes clogged or restricted, it should be replaced. When replacing fuel filters, use the fuel filter specified for the engine being serviced.
In-Tank
A serviceable fuel tank sender filter is located inside the fuel tank at the inlet of the fuel pump.
Fuel Injector Screen
A fuel injector screen filter is located at the top of each fuel injector and is not serviceable. If a fuel injector screen becomes clogged, the fuel injector must be replaced. Refer to Fuel Injector for fuel injector information. Fuel Injector
