Disassembly and Assembly

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove steering column, then place column in a soft-jawed vise.
2. Remove steering wheel.

Securing Clockspring:

3. Place two pieces of tape on clockspring to prevent rotation or damage to clockspring.
4. Remove clockspring. With ignition key installed, rotate tumbler assembly to RUN position while pushing tumbler release pin using a 1/8 inch drift. Remove tumbler assembly.
5. Remove upper column shroud, then the key warning sensor.
6. Remove bearing retaining plate, then remove and discard the snap ring.

Column Lock And Upper Bearing Removal:

7. Remove multi function switch, then the column lock and upper bearing assembly using a puller as shown. If steering shaft shear pins break during housing and bearing removal, entire shaft and column must be replaced. To determine if pins have sheared, measure steering shaft from top end of shaft to center of U-joint bearing. Measurement should be 24.80-24.88 inches. If less than specified, pins have sheared.

ASSEMBLY
1. Install steering column lock and upper bearing assembly.
2. Prick punch steering column upper shaft serration diameter enough to ensure an interference fit between bearing inner race and steering column upper shaft.
3. Position bearing and insulator on steering column upper shaft, then work bearing and insulator as far down steering column upper shaft as possible.
4. Place a 1 1/2 inch piece of pipe with a 3/4 inch inside diameter over end of steering column upper shaft and install steering wheel retaining bolt with a flat washer. Tighten steering wheel bolt until bearing is seated, then remove bolt and washer.
5. Install new snap ring, then the multi-function switch.

8. Install clockspring assembly, then remove tape strips.
9. Install steering wheel.
10. Ensure curl strap is secured by retaining clips, then install steering column into vehicle.
