Removal and Installation






REMOVAL
1. Ensure wheels are in straight ahead position.
2. Remove ignition key and rotate steering wheel slightly until it locks.
3. Remove steering column access panel and trim cover, then the defroster duct connecting hose.
4. Remove steering column lower shroud, then loosen column lower retaining nuts.
5. Remove column upper retaining bolts, then, with column resting on instrument panel brace, remove ignition lock shield, brake shift interlock mechanism and ignition switch retaining screw. Ignition switch will come out with shield.
6. Disconnect electrical connectors from turn signal and hazard switch, then the harness connectors from key warning, windshield wiper switch and slip ring assembly.
7. Tape clockspring inner and outer halves to prevent rotation. Do not remove wire connectors from clockspring attaching point. Wires are to be disconnected from harness at two connectors remotely mounted on steering column.
8. Remove steering shaft universal pinch bolt, then carefully pull column out of instrument panel and remove from vehicle.

Curl Strap:





INSTALLATION
1. Carefully guide column assembly into instrument panel. Ensure curl strap is installed properly and retaining clips are tight.
2. Connect harness connectors for key warning, wiper switch and slip ring assembly, then the connectors to turn signal switch and hazard switch.
3. Install ignition switch and lock shield.
4. Install brake shift interlock mechanism, then connect steering shaft universal joint and install pinch bolt. Do not tighten pinch bolt.
5. Ensure curl strap is in place with retaining clips and install upper column retaining bolts. Do not tighten bolts.
6. Tighten lower column retaining nuts, upper bolts and universal pinch bolt.
7. Install defroster duct connecting hose, then the lower column shroud.
8. Install access panel and trim cover.
9. Inspect column components for proper operation.
