Component Tests and General Diagnostics

WARNING: During the following procedure, power steering pressure may exceed 1200 psi. Ensure proper tool fit prior to performing test. Exercise extreme caution or damage or personal injury may result.

Fig. 1 Pressure Test Analyzer:

1. Disconnect power steering pump pressure hose where it connects to tubing. Install power steering system analyzer 014-00207 and adapter 014-00454, or equivalents. Torque fitting to 29-36 ft lb.
2. Position thermometer in power steering pump reservoir. Ensure gauge valve is set open to allow normal system function. Do not hold steering wheel against a stop for more than 10 seconds at a time.
3. Start engine, then slowly turn steering wheel from lock to lock ten times to bleed system.
4. If required, turn steering wheel fully left and right several times to raise fluid temperature to 50-60°C (122-140°F). Gauge valve must be briefly closed to read operating pressures. Do not leave valve closed for more than 15 seconds.

5. To measure pump output pressure, close gauge set valve, then increase engine speed to 1000-1500 RPM. Read pressure, then open valve. Operating pressure should be 924 psi. If pressure is low, service or replace pump.

6. To measure pressure at gear, open valve, then increase engine speed to 1000-1500 RPM, then turn steering wheel fully left and right. Read pressure. Operating pressure should be 924 psi. If pressure is low, service or replace steering gear.
7. Remove gauge set and adapter, connect high pressure hose and tighten.
8. Start engine, then slowly turn steering wheel lock to lock ten times to bleed system.
