Steering Column: Service and Repair

NOTE: All steering column tube components are assembled with special fasteners. They are designed with a thread locking system to prevent loosening due to vibrations associated with normal vehicle operation.

1. Ensure vehicle front wheels are in the straight-ahead position, then disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove steering wheel.
3. Remove instrument panel righthand and lefthand lower moldings by pulling up and snapping out of retainers.
4. Remove instrument panel lower trim cover, then the air bag sliding contact.
5. Remove tilt steering column lock lever by unscrewing it from steering column tube.
6. Rotate ignition switch to RUN position, then press ignition switch retaining pin through access hole with 1/8-inch drift and remove switch.
7. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
8. Remove instrument panel reinforcement.
9. Remove turn signal and windshield wiper switch.
10. Remove pinch bolt from steering column lower yoke, then, while supporting steering column tube assembly, the steering column tube assembly nuts.
11. Remove ignition/shifter interlock cable retaining screws and cable end assembly, then the steering column tube from vehicle.
12. Reverse procedure to install.
