A/T - AODE/4R70W Shifting Concerns

Article No. 94-6-6
Date: March 23, 1994

TRANSMISSION - AODE/4R70W - HIGHER THAN EXPECTED ENGINE RPM ON 1-2 UPSHIFT OR NO SECOND GEAR-TRANSMISSIONS BUILT FROM 11/4/93 THROUGH 11/8/93

FORD: 1994 CROWN VICTORIA, MUSTANG, THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1994 COUGAR, GRAND MARQUIS, MARK VIII

LIGHT TRUCK: 1994 E-150, F-150

ISSUE:

Vehicles may experience a higher-than-expected engine RPM during the 1-2 upshift or a 1-3 upshift (no shift into 2nd) concern. This may be caused by a damaged intermediate clutch outer piston seal, due to an improperly machined groove for the outer piston seal.

ACTION:

If the transmission requires service, and the outer piston seal is worn or damaged, the intermediate clutch piston (F2AZ-7E005-A) should also be replaced to avoid a repeat repair. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual, Section 07-01, for piston removal and installation instructions.
