ISSUE:
A stack up of production tolerances, in combination with sensitivity of EEC-V (OBD II) calibrations, may result in the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminating and/or the O/D light flashing. When this occurs, the following Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may appear:
ENGINE CODES
^ 1403 DPFE hoses reversed
^ 1406 downstream hose off or plugged
^ 1473,1479,1481 Mustang, continuous fan
^ 1473,1480,1481 Thunderbird/Cougar, continuous fan
^ 1505 Idle Air Control (IAC) airflow exceeds specifications
TRANSMISSION CODES
^ P1731 1-2 shift concern
^ P1732 2-3 shift concern
^ P1733 3-4 shift concern
ACTION:
On a customer concern basis, the following procedure is recommended:
NOTE:
DEALERS WITH SERVICE BAY DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM (SBDS) ARE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN REGIONAL APPROVAL WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM).
1. Perform the EEC-V self test. If any of the subject codes appear, reprogram or replace the PCM. Dealers with SBDS are required to reprogram the PCM using the latest calibration CD-ROM. Dealers without SBDS, refer to the PCM Replacement Chart in this article to determine the correct PCM to install.
2. Test drive the vehicle and perform the EEC-V self test. Confirm that there are no DTCs. If any codes appear, refer to the 1994 Engine/Emissions Diagnosis Manual for further assistance.
CAUTION:
FOR 1994 THUNDERBIRD AND COUGAR, THE PCM RECALIBRATION OR REPLACEMENT AND TRANSMISSION MAIN CONTROL ASSEMBLY CHANGES MUST BE DONE TOGETHER OR TRANSMISSION OVERDRIVE BAND DAMAGE WILL RESULT. DO NOT USE THE 1994 MAIN CONTROL ASSEMBLY WITH THE 1995 CALIBRATION OR THE 1994 PCM CALIBRATION WITH THE 1995 MAIN CONTROL ASSEMBLY.
Obtain an Authorized Modification Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
