^ INSTRUMENT PANEL - GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR OPENS QUICKLY

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to provide information which may be useful in addressing a customer complaint of the glove box door opening too quickly.

ISSUE:
The glove compartment door may open quickly. It goes to the full open position fast because weight has been added to the glove compartment door for air bag-equipped vehicles.

ACTION:
Install a clip assembly on the glove compartment door hinge to slow the opening speed.





1. With the glove compartment door closed, from underneath the instrument panel, locate the slot in the metal reinforcement as shown in Figure 1.





2. Line up the clip over the glove compartment hinge and metal reinforcement, Figure 2.





3. Push the clip over the glove compartment hinge and metal reinforcement until it stops, Figure 3.

4. Slide the clip toward the steering column until it stops, Figure 2.





5. Install the clamp end of the plastic tether to a convenient location on the instrument panel such as the radio antenna cable or the metal reinforcement, Figure 4.

NOTE:
WHEN INSTALLING THIS CLIP, IT MUST BE TETHERED TO THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TO CONTAIN IT WHEN OPENING THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR PAST THE STOPS. IT WILL DETACH FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.

REMOVAL OF CLIP FOR INSTRUMENT PANEL SERVICE

The clip can be removed in one or two ways.

ALTERNATIVE "A"

1. With the glove compartment door closed, slide the clip toward the passenger side until it stops and then pull it off of the instrument panel.

2. Disengage the clamp end of the tether.

NOTE:
ENSURE THAT THE TAB IS NOT BROKEN OFF BEFORE INSTALLING. IF SO, A NEW CLIP MUST BE USED.

ALTERNATIVE "B"

1. Open the glove compartment door to the stops.

2. Depress the stops and slowly open the glove compartment. The clip will pop off of the instrument panel.

3. Disengage the clamp end of the tether.

4. When removing the clip with this method, the tab will break off of the clip and it will be necessary to replace the clip with a new one (F4DZ-54061A32-A).
