Dealer Letter

April 4, 1997

To:
All Ford and Lincoln-Mercury Dealers

Subject:
97S65 - Speed Control Cable Modification

Affected Vehicles
All 1991-1994 Model Year Lincoln Continental cars that are currently registered in the states listed. Also, 1991-1995 Model Year Taurus/Sable cars built at the Atlanta Assembly Plant through 11/29/94 and at the Chicago Assembly Plant through 12/1/94 equipped with 3.8L engine and speed control option that are currently registered in the states listed:

Alaska, Colorado, Michigan, South Dakota, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

When operating one of these vehicles with the speed control engaged in temperatures well below freezing over an extended period of highway travel the throttle may not return to idle when the speed control is disengaged. If this occurs, the engine speed would remain the same even though the speed control is disengaged creating the risk of a vehicle crash. The vehicle can be brought to a stop through braking, shifting to neutral gear, or turning the ignition off.

Service Action
To correct this condition, dealers are to blow out any accumulated water in the speed control cable, install a boot on the existing cable, and retain it with a tie strap.

If an owner of one of these vehicles which is not listed in OASIS believes his/her vehicle should have been included, dealers are to contact their regional office for approval and submit the claim under this program to obtain reimbursement.
