Removal and Installation





Steering Column

Ensure that vehicle front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

Removal

NOTE: All steering column tube components are assembled with fasteners. They are designed with a thread locking system to prevent loosening due to vibrations associated with normal vehicle operation.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable to deplete air bag backup power supply.

2. Remove steering wheel as outlined.

3. Remove instrument panel lower trim cover.

4. Remove air bag sliding contact.

5. Remove tilt steering column lock lever by unscrewing it from steering column tube and remove four screws.

6. Rotate ignition switch to RUN position. Using a 1/8-inch drift, press ignition switch retaining pin through access hole and remove ignition switch.

7. Remove four retaining screws from lower steering column shroud and remove lower steering column shroud, and upper steering column shroud






8. Remove two instrument panel reinforcement brace retaining bolts. Remove reinforcement.







9. Disconnect transmission shift cable and bracket from steering actuator housing by removing one screw (column shift).






10. Disconnect transmission shift cable and bracket loop from shift tube hook (column shift).

11. Remove two turn signal and windshield wiper switch retaining screws and set turn signal and windshield wiper switch aside. Remove wiring connector from ignition switch.






12. Remove four nuts retaining column skid plate and remove plate.

13. Remove pinch bolt from steering column tube.

14. While supporting steering column tube assembly, remove four steering column tube retaining nuts. Lower steering column tube and disconnect vacuum hoses at parking brake release switch or remove vacuum release assembly.

15. Disconnect transmission shift cable and bracket from selector lever pivot.

16. Remove transmission shift cable and bracket from lower column mounting bracket.

17. Remove two shift lock actuator cable retaining screws and remove shift lock actuator (console shift).

18. Remove steering column tube from vehicle.

A - Tighten to 41-56 N.m (31-41 Lb-Ft)


Installation

1. Align the steering column lower yoke to lower steering column shaft. Install one bolt and tighten to 41-56 N.m (31-41 lb-ft).

2. Connect steering column instrument panel clamp vacuum hoses.

3. Position shift lock actuator and install two retaining screws (automatic console shift).

4. Support the steering column tube to column support bracket. Install four retaining nuts and tighten to 13-19 N.m (9-14 lb-ft).

5. Position transmission shift cable and bracket to lower two screws of steering column tube. Tighten to 7-11 N.m (5-8 lb-ft).

6. Snap transmission shift cable and bracket onto shift selector pivot ball.

7. Position turn signal and windshield wiper switch and install two retaining screws. Tighten to 2-3 N.m (18-26 lb-in).

8. Connect all electrical connectors.

9. Install transmission shift cable and bracket loop on shift selector hook, and install transmission range selector cable bracket to steering actuator housing. Install retaining screw.

10. Install steering column tube to parking brake control shake brace.

11. Install instrument panel reinforcement brace and secure with two retaining bolts.

12. Install lower instrument panel cover.

13. Install upper steering column shroud and lower steering column shroud.

14. Install ignition switch assembly.

15. Install tilt steering column lock lever onto column.

16. Install air bag sliding contact assembly with three screws. Tighten to 2-3 N.m (18-26 lb-in).

17. Install steering wheel onto steering gear input worm gear and rack. Install a new bolt and tighten to 31-48 N.m (22-33 lb-ft).

18. Position driver side air bag module to steering wheel. Install two retaining screws. Tighten to 4-5.4 N.m (36-47 lb-in).

19. Connect battery ground cable and air bag backup power supply.

20. Verify air bag warning indicator.
