Distributor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the adaptive strategy.

2. Disconnect coil wire from distributor.

3. Remove distributor cap and position it aside.

4. Unplug distributor electrical connector.

5. If distributor is not being replaced, scribe a reference mark across distributor base flange and cylinder head. Note rotor position for installation reference.

6. Remove hold-down bolts and distributor.

7. Remove O-ring.

INSTALLATION

Distributor Unit:






1. Install new O-ring.

NOTE: Distributor can only be installed in one direction. When installing distributor, ensure that offset drive tangs engage with the camshaft slots.

2. Position distributor and install mounting bolts. If distributor was not replaced, align reference marks made during removal and tighten the mounting bolts. If distributor was replaced, set timing before tightening bolts to 19-25 Nm (14-19 ft lb).

3. Install distributor electrical connector.

4. Install distributor cap and coil wire.

5. Install negative battery cable.

6. Check and adjust ignition timing.
