Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

WARNING:
^ ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN SERVICING AN AIR BAG VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG.
^ CARRY A LIVE AIR BAG WITH THE BAG AND TRIM COVER POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT WILL THEN DEPLOY WITH A MINIMAL CHANCE OF INJURY.
^ PLACE A LIVE AIR BAG ON THE BENCH OR SURFACE WITH THE TRIM COVER UP, AWAY FROM THE SURFACE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE MOTION OF THE MODULE IF IT IS ACCIDENTALLY DEPLOYED.
^ NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAGS. DOING SO MAY RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT WHICH COULD RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
^ VEHICLE SENSOR ORIENTATION IS CRITICAL FOR PROPER SYSTEM OPERATION. IF A VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH AN AIR BAG SYSTEM IS INVOLVED IN A CRASH, INSPECT THE SENSOR MOUNTING BRACKET AND WIRING PIGTAIL FOR DEFORMATION. IF DAMAGED, THE SENSOR SHOULD BE REPLACED WHETHER OR NOT THE AIR BAG IS DEPLOYED.
^ TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REMOVING OR REPLACING ANY AIR BAG SYSTEM COMPONENTS. TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT ONE MINUTE.

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Wait one minute for the driver side air bag module backup power supply to deplete.

2. Remove the two driver side air bag module bolts.

NOTE: Make sure the front wheels are in a straight-ahead position to ensure alignment of the air bag sliding contact.

3. Disconnect the (A) air bag sliding contact electrical connector and the (B) horn electrical connector.

4. Remove the driver side air bag module.

5. Remove the steering wheel bolt.

6. Use (A) Steering Wheel Puller T67L-3600-A to remove the (B) steering wheel.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove the steering wheel by hitting the steering column shaft with a hammer. The column will collapse.

7. Tape the air bag sliding contact to prevent disturbing the air bag sliding contact alignment.

INSTALLATION

1. Remove the tape from the air bag sliding contact.
2. Position the steering wheel and install a new steering wheel bolt. Tighten the steering wheel bolt to 46-63 Nm (34-46 lb-ft).
3. Connect the driver side air bag module electrical connector to the air bag sliding contact and install the driver side air bag module to the steering wheel.
4. Install the two driver side air bag module bolts through the rear of the steering wheel. Tighten the driver side air bag module bolts to 4-6 Nm (35-53 lb-in).
5. Connect the battery ground cable.
