Ignition Timing: Adjustments
IGNITION TIMING1. Place transmission in PARK or NEUTRAL. Turn A/C and heater in OFF position.
2. Connect Rotunda Timing Analyzer 059-00014 or equivalent to the number 1 cylinder ignition wire (following tool manufacturer's instructions).
3. Disconnect the single wire in-line SPOUT connector.
4. Start the engine and allow to warm to operating temperature.
CAUTION: To set ignition timing correctly, a remote starter switch should not be used. Use the ignition switch only to start the vehicle. Disconnecting the start wire at the starter solenoid will cause the Ignition Control Module (ICM) to revert to start mode timing after the vehicle is started. Reconnecting to start wire after the vehicle is running will not correct the ignition timing.
5. With engine at specified RPM, check/adjust initial ignition timing to specification. Refer to Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label in engine compartment for specifications.
6. Reconnect the single wire in-line SPOUT connector and check ignition timing advance while varying engine RPM to verify distributor is advancing beyond initial ignition timing setting. If ignition timing is not advancing, refer to the Powertrain Control Diagnosis.
7. Remove Rotunda Timing Analyzer 059-00014 or equivalent.
