Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

INSPECTION AND VERIFICATION
1. Verify the vehicle owner's original concern by operating the engine cooling system to duplicate the concern.

Mechanical Or Electrical Concerns:

2. Inspect to determine if one of the Mechanical Or Electrical Concerns apply.
3. Perform component pressure test.
a. Open hood and place fender covers.

b. When engine is cool, cautiously remove radiator cap. Fit correct adapter to Rotunda Radiator/Heater Core Pressure Tester 021-00012 or equivalent and clip in position onto radiator filler neck.

WARNING: Never remove the radiator cap under any conditions while the engine is operating. Failure to follow these instructions could result in personal injury and/or damage to the cooling system or engine. To avoid having scalding hot coolant or steam blow out of the radiator, use extreme care when removing the radiator cap from a hot radiator. Wait until the engine has cooled, then wrap a thick cloth around the radiator cap and turn it slowly to the first stop. Step back while the pressure is released from the cooling system. When certain all the pressure has been released, press down on the radiator cap (still with a cloth), turn and remove.

c. Pump up cooling system to a maximum of 110 kPa (16 psi) and hold for two minutes. If pressure drops within this time, inspect for leaks and service as required.
d. Clean and inspect radiator cap.
e. Pressure test radiator cap.
f. Check engine coolant level in radiator and in radiator coolant recovery reservoir. Fill as required with a recommended 50/50 mixture of Ford Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or B (in Canada CXC-8-B) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A and water, and install radiator cap.
g. Remove fender covers and close hood.
4. If the concern remains after the inspection and pressure test, determine the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart. Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
