Removal
1. Rotate crankshaft to zero degrees Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Drain engine cooling system.
4. Remove air cleaner outlet tube to throttle body.
5. Mark and remove vacuum lines to upper intake manifold.
6. Disconnect PFE or DPFE hose(s) from EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube, loosen lower EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube nut and rotate EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube away from EGR valve (EGR valve).
7. Disconnect the Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IAT sensor) (unleaded gasoline only), Throttle Position Sensor (TP sensor), (IAC valve), and PFE or DPFE sensor electrical connectors.
8. Relieve pressure at the fuel pressure relief valve (Schrader valve).
WARNING: COVER FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE WITH SHOP CLOTH TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL FUEL SPRAY INTO EYES.
9. Remove fuel tube safety clips.
10. Disconnect fuel tubes.
CAUTION: Cover fuel tube ends with clean shop cloths to prevent dirt from entering opening.
11. Remove throttle body. Discard old intake manifold upper gasket.
12. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring retainers from rocker arm cover stud bolts and each fuel injector, and position the engine control sensor wiring out of the way.
13. Remove fuel injection supply manifold and fuel injector.
NOTE: Fuel injectors and fuel injection supply manifold may be removed with lower intake manifold as an assembly.
14. Remove ignition wires from spark plugs. Remove wire harness retainers from valve cover retaining stud bolts.
15. Remove ignition coil and bracket from LH front cylinder head and set aside.
16. Disconnect upper radiator hose and heater water hoses.
17. Remove distributor cap rubber boot (unleaded gasoline only).
18. On unleaded gasoline only, mark distributor housing to cylinder block, remove distributor cap and note distributor rotor position.
19. On non-flexable fuel (FF) vehicles, disconnect ignition control module electrical connector. Remove distributor. On flexible fuel (FF) vehicles, remove camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) and housing.
20. Disconnect fuel charging wiring from engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor) and engine control sensor wiring from the water temperature indicator sending unit.
21. If LH (front) cylinder head is being removed perform the following:
- Disconnect generator electrical connectors.
- Remove drive belt.
- Remove drive belt tensioner.
- Remove generator Generator (GEN).
- Remove power steering support bracket and power steering pump as an assembly and set aside in a position to prevent fluid from leaking out.
- Remove oil level indicator tube retaining nut from exhaust manifold stud bolt. Rotate or remove oil level indicator tube from exhaust manifold.
22. If RH (rear) cylinder head is being removed, perform the following:
- Remove drive belt tensioner bracket.
- Remove heater supply tube retaining brackets from exhaust manifold.
- Remove vehicle speed sensor cable retaining bolt.
- Remove throttle emission control solenoid and bracket.
23. Remove valve covers.
24. Loosen rocker arm seat retaining bolts enough to allow the rocker arm to be lifted off the push rod and rotated to one side.
NOTE: Regardless of cylinder head removal order, the No.3 cylinder intake valve push rod must be removed to allow removal of lower intake manifold.
25. Remove push rods. Identify the position of each push rod. The push rods should be installed in their original position during reassembly.
26. Remove lower intake manifold.
27. Remove spark plugs.
28. Remove exhaust manifolds.
29. Remove cylinder head retaining bolts and discard.
30. Remove cylinder heads.
31. Remove and discard the old head gaskets.
