This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include 1997-98 model year vehicles.

ISSUE:
Harsh engagements and harsh shifts with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) 628, P0741 and/or P1744 may be stored in memory after a transaxle has been replaced with an exchange unit. This may be caused by the incorrect transaxle being installed. The transaxle gear ratio varies between models and model years of the same vehicle, also some 1994 and 1995 3.8L Taurus vehicles contain Police packages which require a unique transaxle and the vehicles may not resemble Police vehicles. They may be Forest Ranger vehicles, College Security vehicles, County or State vehicles containing a Police package.

ACTION:
For harsh engagement and/or harsh shifts with the subject DTCs after the transaxle was replaced, verify the transaxle is the correct model for the vehicle that it was installed in. Refer to the following text for diagnosis.





To verify a 3.8L Taurus vehicle does not have a Police package, check the calibration tag located on the driver's side door pillar. A vehicle with a Police package will have a "B" as the fourth character (Figure 1). This vehicle must contain the Police transaxle to function properly. If it does not, the transaxle must be replaced with the correct transaxle.











Refer to Figures 2 through 4 to determine if the correct transaxle has been installed.
