Attachment III - Technical Information
COOLING FAN AND SHROUD ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT
AFFECTED VEHICLES:
CERTAIN 1995 MODEL YEAR TAURUS/SABLE AND MUSTANG
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Taurus/Sable 3.0L and 3.8L
NOTE:
If equipped, do not remove the electronic circuit breaker module installed as part of Safety Recall 01S30, or the jumper harness installed as part of Safety Recall 97S66 or 95S22. See Figure 3.
1. Check OASIS to see if Safety Recall 01S30 is open for the vehicle.
^ If Safety Recall 01S30 is open, perform that Recall instead of this repair.
^ If Safety Recall 01S30 is not open, continue with this repair.
2. Record preset radio stations, then disconnect the battery negative cable.
3. If equipped, remove the radiator upper sight shield from the vehicle.
4. Remove the constant control relay module (CCRM) from the upper radiator support and position it out of the way. See Figure 2.
5. Disconnect and remove the front airbag impact sensor from the vehicle. See Figure 2.
6. On 3.8L-equipped models, remove the wiring harness from the cooling fan shroud.
7. Remove the two (2) fasteners securing the cooling fan and shroud assembly to the radiator, then remove the assembly from the vehicle. If equipped, do not remove the electronic circuit breaker module installed as part of Safety Recall 01S30, or the jumper harness installed as part of Safety Recall 97S66 or 95S22. See Figure 3.
8. Position the new cooling fan and shroud assembly into the vehicle.
9. Install the two (2) fasteners securing the cooling fan and shroud assembly to the radiator. Tighten the bolts to 3 N.m (28 lb-in) and the nuts to 10 N.m (88 lb-in).
10. On 3.8L-equipped models, install the wiring harness onto the cooling fan shroud.
11. Install the front airbag impact sensor into the vehicle and connect the electrical connector. Tighten the bolts to 10 N.m (88 lb-in).
12. Install the CCRM to the upper radiator support. Tighten the bolts to 10 N.m (88 lb-in).
13. Connect the cooling fan electrical connector.
14. If equipped, position the radiator upper sight shield onto the vehicle and install the fasteners.
15. Connect the battery negative cable and set radio stations.
16. Check cooling fan operation.
Mustang 3.8L and 5.0L H0
1. Record preset radio stations, then disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. If equipped, remove the radiator upper sight shield from the vehicle.
3. Disconnect the coolant recovery reservoir hose from the radiator fill neck, then disconnect the coolant recovery reservoir electrical connector and remove the bolt attaching the reservoir to the bracket. See Figure 4.
4. Remove the reservoir bracket from the upper radiator support and position it out of the way. Then remove the reservoir from the vehicle. See Figure 4.
5. Disconnect the two (2) wiring harness electrical connectors located on the right side of the radiator. See Figure 5.
6. Disconnect the cooling fan motor electrical connector. See Figure 6.
7. Remove the two (2) fasteners securing the cooling fan and shroud assembly to the radiator, then remove the module from the vehicle.
8. Position the new cooling fan and shroud assembly into the vehicle.
9. Install the two (2) fasteners securing the cooling fan and shroud assembly to the radiator. Tighten the bolts to 3 N.m (28 lb-in).
10. Connect the two (2) wiring harness electrical connectors located on the right side of the radiator.
11. Position the coolant recovery reservoir into the vehicle, then install the coolant recovery bracket onto the upper radiator support. Tighten the bolts to 8 N.m (70 lb-in).
12. Install the bolt securing the coolant recovery reservoir to the bracket. Then, connect the reservoir electrical connector and the reservoir hose to the radiator fill neck.
13. Connect the cooling fan electrical connector.
14. If equipped, position the upper radiator shroud onto the vehicle and install the fasteners.
15. Connect the battery negative cable and set radio stations.
16. Check cooling fan operation.
