1995-96 CONTINENTAL

ISSUE:
A metallic "click" noise may come from the transaxle during reverse engagement on some vehicles. This may be due to the final drive ring gear contacting the internal case surface during reverse engagement.

ACTION:
Replace the rear planet support with a revised design rear planet support (Figure 1) which should reduce the possibility of final drive ring-to-case contact during reverse engagement. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Disassemble the transaxle following the procedure outlined in the appropriate Service Manual until the removal of the final drive assembly and rear planet support assembly (Figure 2) is complete.

2. Transfer the low/intermediate clutch piston and return spring assembly and the # 16 thrust washer onto the new rear planet support assembly.

3. Reassemble the final drive assembly and new rear planet support assembly.

4. Install the spacer for the new rear planet support onto the case shoulder above the final drive ring (Figures 3 and 4).

NOTE:
THE SPACER MUST BE INSTALLED BETWEEN THE FINAL DRIVE RING GEAR AND THE NEW DESIGN REAR PLANET SUPPORT.

5. Reinstall the final drive assembly and rear planet support into the case as one unit. Verify that both lube tube holes in the rear planet support align with the case window.

6. Reinstall the original beveled retaining ring. Perform the beveled retaining ring clearance check and # 16 thrust washer clearance as outlined in the appropriate Service Manual.

7. Complete the transaxle reassembly as outlined in the appropriate Service Manual.
