Air Flow Meter/Sensor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

CAUTION: The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor hot wire sensing element and housing are calibrated as a unit and must be serviced as a complete assembly. Do not damage the sensing element (internal to housing) or possible failure of the MAF sensor may occur.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected or reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its fuel trim. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the fuel trim.

2. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from MAF sensor and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor.
3. Loosen engine air cleaner tube clamps on air cleaner outlet tube and air cleaner cover.
4. Disconnect air cleaner outlet tube from MAF sensor.
5. Remove air cleaner cover and remove MAF sensor from air cleaner cover.
6. To install, reverse Removal procedure. Tighten retaining bolts for MAF sensor to the air cleaner cover to 5-7 Nm (40-61 lb in). Tighten engine air cleaner tube clamps to 2.3-3.2 Nm (20-28 lb in). Connect engine control sensor wiring to the IAT sensor and engine control sensor wiring.
