TRANSMISSION - 4R70W - ENGINE IN LIMITED OPERATING STRATEGY WHEN TRANSMISSION
TESTER IS USED - SERVICE TIP

FORD:
1996 CROWN VICTORIA, MUSTANG, THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1996 COUGAR, GRAND MARQUIS, MARK VIII, TOWN CAR

LIGHT TRUCK:
1996 E-150, F-150

ISSUE:
When the transmission tester is used to diagnose any transmission concern, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will consider this an "open" circuit and cause the engine to operate in Limited Operating Strategy (LOS). Do not use the transmission tester to perform the dynamic test on these vehicles. This condition will exist when the vehicle wiring harness is disconnected from the transmission for any reason or if the PCM detects an "open" or "short" in the Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) circuit.

ACTION:
When this condition occurs, perform normal diagnostics as listed in the appropriate Service Manual. Section 07-01. Check for harness disconnection and "open" circuits in the vehicle wiring harness and/or internal transmission harness and in the EPC solenoid. Do not perform the "Dynamic Test" procedures with the transmission tester as instructed in the appropriate Service Manual. All other test modes can be used.
