This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Ford Motor Company has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1996 Model Year Thunderbird and Cougar cars that are equipped with Semi-Automatic Temperature Control.
Safety Defect
On some of these cars, the semi-automatic temperature control module may malfunction and cause erratic blower operation. The blower 1) may operate continuously at high blower, 2) may not operate regardless of control position or 3) may operate erratically between no blower and high blower. If the blower output is limited or stops, the vehicle's defroster may not clear the windshield of frost or fog.
Temporary Automatic Temperature Control Resetting Procedure
If the condition occurs on your car, you may reset the semi-automatic temperature control by performing the following procedure. Ford recommends that you do not attempt to perform this procedure while driving.
1. Turn ignition key ON.
2. Place temperature control on AUTO and set mode switch to PANEL.
3. Press the OUTSIDE TEMP and COOL buttons at the same time, then release the buttons and press the WARM button.
4. After the display "dances", press the OUTSIDE TEMP button then press WARM button. Move blower control off AUTO. The blower motor should start to run.
This procedure can be used to temporarily restore function until a replacement module is installed. It may be necessary to repeat the procedure if the condition reoccurs prior to repair.
Repairs
At no charge to you, your dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the control module with a revised design module. Dealers currently have instructions and parts ordering information.
In The Meantime
Please place this letter in your vehicle's glove compartment. Refer to the above resetting procedure in the event the blower malfunctions before a replacement module is installed. This letter should be removed from the glove compartment when a replacement module has been installed.
