Drive Belt: Service and Repair

NOTE: Minor cracks in V-grooved portion of drive belt are considered normal and acceptable. If drive belt has chunks missing from ribs, drive belt should be replaced. Conditions requiring drive belt replacement are rib chunk out, severe glazing, frayed cords, etc. Replace any drive belt exhibiting one of these conditions.

REMOVAL
1. On water pump drive belt, proceed as follows:
a. Remove water pump pulley shield bolts from lefthand valve cover, then shield from vehicle.
b. Remove water pump drive pulley, then rotate water pump belt tensioner clockwise by hand.
2. On accessory drive belt, rotate tensioner clockwise using breaker bar installed in 3/8 inch square hole in drive belt tensioner arm.
3. Lift belt over pulley flanges, then remove from vehicle.

INSTALLATION
1. On accessory drive belt, position belt under tensioner pulley into recess in front cover and up onto tensioner pulley.
2. On water pump drive belt, install belt by rotating tensioner clockwise by hand.
3. Install drive belt onto rest of pulleys, rotating tensioner clockwise to install belt on last pulley.

4. Ensure all V-grooves on belt make proper contact with pulley.
5. On water pump drive belt, install water pump pulley shield, then shield bolts to lefthand valve cover.
