Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION
The transmission is a four speed, front wheel drive automatic overdrive unit with a three element torque converter and torque converter clutch.

OPERATION
Both electronic and hydraulic control systems are employed by the transmission. Electronic functions include shift scheduling, 3-2 shift timing, coast braking, Electronic Pressure Control (EPC), for shift quality), and Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) control. Hydraulic functions include modification of line pressure and shift valve position for optimal shift feel and scheduling, modulated application of the TCC, 3-2 shift timing, and engine braking.

CONSTRUCTION
The gear train consists of a compound planetary gear set, pinion and side gear differential, chain drive, and planetary gear set final drive. In addition, a control switch is provided which allows the driver to prevent a shift into 4th (Overdrive) gear and uses engine braking to help slow the vehicle.
