Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

Dual Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) and Pipe

REMOVAL

1. Raise vehicle.

CAUTION: When servicing exhaust system or removing exhaust components, disconnect all Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) at the wiring connectors to prevent damage to the Heated Oxygen Sensors and wiring harness.

2. Disconnect Heated Oxygen Sensors at wiring harness connectors and remove.

3. Remove front and rear dual converter Y pipe flange fasteners from exhaust manifolds.

4. Remove both bolt and nut retainers from transaxle.

5. Remove two remaining nuts and bolts from dual converter Y pipe outlet connection. Discard exhaust converter outlet gasket.

6. Remove dual converter Y pipe.

7. Remove Heated Oxygen Sensors from the dual converter Y pipe.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: If sub-frame or rear sub-frame is lowered, heated oxygen sensor and connectors should be located prior to sub-frame installation.

1. Install Heated Oxygen Sensors into dual converter Y pipe.
- Tighten Heated Oxygen Sensors to 34-46 Nm (26-34 lb ft).

2. Loosely install dual converter Y pipe to exhaust manifold connections.

3. Install dual converter Y pipe bolt and nut retainers to transaxle.

4. Install new exhaust converter outlet gasket.

5. Install dual converter Y pipe to exhaust system flex tube.

6. Align exhaust system to specification. Starting at front of system, tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. Tighten muffler clamp last.

7. Connect Heated Oxygen Sensors to wiring harness connectors.

8. Check system for leaks.

9. Lower vehicle.
