ISSUE:
Some vehicles may have an intermittent no start, a lean stall at about 16 km/h (10 mph) when the engine and ambient temperature are warm, a surge at 64 km/h (40 mph) and/or a cold engine hesitation/stumble. The transmission may have a rough 3-2 shift quality during vehicle coasting and/or Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 1358 present. These symptoms can be improved upon with a revised Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration.
ACTION:
Use the following Service Procedure to determine if a new PCM with a revised operating calibration is required.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Perform the Diagnostic Procedure in the 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Car/Truck Service Manual. If codes other than 1358 are present, service as required.
2. If no codes are present, reprogram the PCM by following the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) reprogramming tool, February 1996 CD-ROM release or later. If SBDS is not available, replace the PCM. Dealers with SBDS are required to reprogram the PCM with the appropriate calibration per the following Application Chart. Only non-SBDS dealers are permitted to replace the PCM. Refer to the following Application Chart for correct calibration or part number.
NOTE:
DEALERS WITH SBDS ARE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN REGIONAL APPROVAL WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
