Steering Column
Disassembly
1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Wait one minute for air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete its stored energy.
2. Remove steering wheel.
3. Remove steering column from vehicle.
4. Remove steering column lower yoke, steering column upper bearing spring, suspension height sensor control ring and steering column bearing tolerance ring.
5. Remove turn indicator cancel cam by pushing up with flat-bladed screwdriver. Note direction of flush surface.
6. Remove two bolts retaining ignition switch and remove ignition switch assembly.
7. Remove bearing retainer and steering column upper bearing spring.
8. Remove steel steering column bearing tolerance ring and steering column bearing sleeve.
9. Remove plastic bearing retainer from ignition switch lock cylinder bore. Replace if damaged.
10. Remove metal steering column lock housing bearing from ignition switch lock cylinder bore.
11. Remove steering column lock gear from ignition switch lock cylinder bore.
12. Remove two tilt pivot bolts. Use caution as steering column position spring will release when bolts are removed. Remove steering column lock cylinder housing.
13. Remove steering gear input worm gear and rack from steering column.
14. For column shift cars, remove three screws securing shift lock actuator and transmission shift selector position insert. Remove transmission shift selector position insert and shift lock actuator.
15. Remove four screws securing transmission column shift selector tube.
16. Remove pin retaining steering column lock pawl from steering actuator housing and remove steering column lock pawl.
17. Remove steering column lock lever actuator from steering actuator housing.
18. Remove three screws retaining steering column lower bearing retainer and remove steering column bearing from steering column lower bearing retainer.
19. Remove steering column mounting bracket.
20. Remove steering column lock actuator lever pin using a drift. Remove steering column locking lever (RH) steering column lock left hand lever and steering column locking lever springs.
