^ NOISE - WINDNOISE AT A-PILLAR AROUND
WINDSHIELD AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS

FORD:
1996 TAURUS SHO, TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1996 SABLE

ISSUE:
A windnoise may be evident on some vehicles along the A-pillar and/or around the windshield. The noise may be caused by the cutline seals on the front doors not being fully seated or the seals not being stiff enough. There may also be a windnoise around the windshield due to wind traveling up the A-pillar between the windshield moulding and the A-pillars on both front sides, which may cause the moulding to vibrate.

ACTION:
Replace the cutline seals on both front doors and install foam under the windshield moulding along both A-pillars. This should reduce the possibility of windnoise at the windshield and/or A-pillar. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 12/1/95

1. Replace the cutline seals and verify the seals are fully seated (Figure 1).

2. Firmly seat seal under the door top moulding using your hands. When the door is closed, the seal should contact the body side (Figure 1).

3. Starting at the top corner of the windshield, fully insert Foam (F6DZ-5403204-AA) underneath the windshield moulding along the A-pillar using a wooden shim or nylon squeegee. The foam must be fully installed to contact the urethane bead (Figure 2).

4. Install foam the full length of the A-pillar. Cut the foam to fit. If this opening is large enough to place an additional piece of foam, do so. The entire cavity along the full length of the A-pillar must be filled with foam on both sides.

5. Make sure that all the grille assembly, cowl top vent, pins and clips in Figure 3 are fully seated.

6. If TSB 96-3-1 has already been performed and the vehicle still exhibits the concern, verify the cutline seals are fully seated and perform Steps 3 and 4 of this TSB.

VEHICLES BUILT AFTER 12/1/95

The latest level cutline seals have a higher compression load deflection. This increased stiffness stops the seal from vibrating. The foam underneath the windshield moulding stops the wind from traveling below the moulding. Refer to the Steps above and perform Steps 3, 4, and 5.
