TRANSAXLE - AX4N - NEW DESIGN ELASTOMERIC GASKETS FOR MAIN CONTROL COVER AND BOTTOM PAN

FORD:
1996 TAURUS SHO, TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1996 CONTINENTAL, SABLE

ISSUE:
As of February, 1996, all of the AX4N transaxles will contain an elastomeric-type gasket for the main control cover and bottom pan. This unique gasket replaces the previously used cork-style gasket. This elastomeric gasket has improved durability and sealing capability and is reusable.

ACTION:
If removal is necessary of a main control cover and/or bottom pan on an AX4N transaxle containing an elastomeric gasket, clean, inspect and reuse the elastomeric gasket if not damaged. Torque the main control cover and bottom pan retaining bolts to 10-12 N-m (7-9 lb-ft)

NOTE:
EXCEPT FOR SOME OF THE AX4N TRANSAXLES THAT WILL BE BUILT OCTOBER 16, 1995, AX4N TRANSAXLES BUILT PRIOR TO FEBRUARY 1996 WILL CONTAIN A CORK-STYLE GASKET FOR THE MAIN CONTROL COVER AND BOTTOM PAN AND MUST BE SERVICED WITH A CORK-STYLE GASKET. DO NOT INSTALL AN ELASTOMERIC GASKET ON A TRANSAXLE THAT ORIGINALLY HAD A CORK-STYLE GASKET.
