ISSUE:
The Rear Crankshaft Seal Removal Tool (T92C-6700-CH), which is currently released for use on 2.5L and 3.0L Duratec engines, must be properly modified as outlined in the 1994-1/2 Essential Special Service Tool Instruction Manual to make sure that the tool functions without causing damage to the crankshaft sealing surface. Failure to properly modify the tool, and not using the shim, will result in crankshaft damage and an inadequate repair.
ACTION:
Properly modify Rear Crankshaft Seal Removal Tool (T92C-6700-CH) and be sure it is used in conjunction with a 0.25 mm soft metal shim in accordance with Service Manual procedures. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
NOTE:
TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE CRANKSHAFT SEALING SURFACE DURING SEAL REMOVAL, THE TOOL MUST ALSO BE USED AS SPECIFIED IN THE SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURES, WHICH INCLUDES THE USE OF A 0.25 mm SOFT METAL SHIM (COPPER IS PREFERRED) TO PROTECT THE CRANKSHAFT SEALING SURFACE AS THE TOOL IS INSERTED BETWEEN THE CRANKSHAFT AND THE SEAL DURING REMOVAL.
CAUTION:
FOR 2.5L DURATEC ENGINES, REAR CRANK SEAL REMOVER T95P-6701-EH (THE PREFERRED TOOL) MAY BE USED IN PLACE OF T92C-6700-CH. T95P-6701-EH WILL NOT WORK ON 3.0L DURATEC APPLICATIONS BECAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT TOOL CLEARANCE OVER THE AX4N PILOT BUSHING.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE:
FOR 2.5L DURATEC ENGINES, BE SURE THE CRANKSHAFT REAR SEALING SURFACE IS CLEAN AND FREE OF ANY RUST OR CORROSION PRIOR TO USING REAR CRANK SEAL REMOVER T95P-6701-EH. TO CLEAN THE CRANKSHAFT REAR SEALING SURFACE, USE EXTRA-FINE EMERY CLOTH OR EXTRA-FINE 0000 STEEL WOOL WITH METAL SURFACE CLEANER F4AZ-19A536-RA.
1. For rear main seal removal on 2.5L and 3.0L Duratec engines when Rear Main Seal Remover T92C-6700-CH is used, refer to Steps 1a through 1c.
a. Rework the previously released Seal Remover (T92C-6700-CH) prior to use by removing the first set of steps (Figure 1).
b. To avoid damaging the crankshaft, remove the crankshaft rear oil seal in accordance with Service Manual procedures. A 0.25 mm piece of soft metal shim stock (preferably copper, but any soft metal will work) should be used to protect the crankshaft sealing surface during seal removal. This is accomplished by first sliding the soft metal shim between the crankshaft sealing surface and the crankshaft rear oil seal. Then tap the end of the "ladder" portion of the removal tool as the tip of the tool is slid between the seal and the shim, hooking the seal lip. The seal may then be removed by engaging the removal tool "steps" with the small pry fork supplied with the tool, and pulling the "ladder" portion rearward of the engine while prying with the small pry fork in one motion (Figure 2).
c. Carefully pry the seal from the engine.
2. For rear main seal removal on 2.5L Duratec only when Rear Main Seal Remover T95P-6701-EH is used, refer to Steps 2a and 2b.
a. Insert Rear Crank Seal Remover T95P-6701-EH over the crankshaft flange and thread the tool into the crankshaft rear oil seal by rotating the tool in a clockwise direction.
NOTE:
IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO HOLD THE SEAL IN A VISE TO REMOVE THE REAR CRANK SEAL REMOVER TOOL FROM THE SEAL.
b. Install Impact Slide Hammer (T59L-100-B) on Rear Crank Seal Remover (T95P-6701-EH) and slide the hammer to the rear of the engine to remove the crankshaft rear oil seal.
