TRAILER WIRING - PROCEDURES FOR INSTALLING TRAILER WIRING HARNESSES ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH LAMP OUT WARNING LAMP BUILT THROUGH 7/15/96 - SERVICE TIP

ISSUE:
The "Lamp Out" warning lamp on the instrument panel may illuminate if the trailer wiring harness was installed incorrectly. This will occur if the wiring harness was installed on the wrong side of the lamp out warning module. The voltage reading to the module will drop, causing the module to illuminate the "Lamp Out" warning bulb on the instrument panel.
ACTION:
Refer to the 1996 Taurus/Sable Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM) and the following Service Procedure when installing a trailer wiring harness on these vehicles.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
^ On vehicles equipped with lamp out warning modules, the parking lamps must be wired in before the lamp out warning module CKT. 1046 (T). Refer to Figures 1 and 2, and 1996 Taurus/Sable EVTM, Page 72-1.
^ On vehicles equipped without lamp out warning modules, the parking lamps may be wired in the harness at any location of CKT. 14.
2. Stoplamps are CKT. 810 (R/LG).
a. On vehicles equipped with lamp out warning modules, the stoplamp must be wired in before the lamp out warning module in CKT 810. Refer to Figures 1 and 2 and Page 72-2 of the EVTM.
b. For vehicles without lamp out warning modules, the stoplamp may be wired in the harness at any location on CKT. 810.
3. Left hand turn CKT. 9 (LG/O) and right hand turn CKT. 5 (O/LB). These wires can be wired in the harness at any location. Refer to Pages 72-3 through 72-5 of the EVTM.
4. Ground CKT. The ground can be picked up at location 401 for sedans and 400 for wagons. Refer to Pages 92-5 through 92-7 of the EVTM.
5. Backup lamps are CKT. 140 (BK/PK). These wires can be wired in at any location. Refer to Pages 93-1 and 93-2 of the EVTM.
