This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the latest level parts.

ISSUE
The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) indicator may illuminate on some vehicles. Preliminary investigation will indicate Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 01165 and/or 01175. Pinpoint tests will show no failure. This could be due to moisture entering the ABS module connector, 01057, which causes electrical shorts and/or corrosion.

ACTION
Add Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound to ABS connector C1057, and seal the ABS system ground eyelet by point-soldering the crimp and applying Silicone Gasket And Sealant to minimize moisture entry into the connector. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Figure 1 is a flowchart that can be referred to in addition to the following procedure.

1. Perform Pinpoint Tests "C" and/or "D" as listed in the 1996 Taurus/Sable Service Manual, Pages 06-09-25 through 06-09-28.

2. If the results of the pinpoint tests do not isolate the failure, disconnect the battery negative cable and disconnect the anti-lock brake module (-20219- in the -20346- anti-lock control and module assembly) connector 01057. Visually inspect the module connector header for signs of moisture entry and/or corrosion (green in color). If moisture entry and/or corrosion is found, continue with procedure. If no moisture is present, go to Step 6.

3. If the vehicle has already been serviced following this TSB procedure, examine completeness of items listed in the following instructions. If the repair has been found to be incomplete, then complete this TSB. Otherwise, replace the vehicle harness and ABS module as outlined in the appropriate Service Manual, Page 06-09-33.

4. Remove any moisture present in the anti-lock brake control module connector by using compressed air. Clean the wire harness connector by removing the red terminal lock from its face and applying compressed air. Reinstall the red terminal lock in the harness connector.

5. Verify the module connector and the -14290- harness connector are free of moisture and corrosion. Reconnect the connector per Step 7 and run the engine for 10 minutes. Shut off engine, wait 5 minutes and remove any additional water present.

6. Fill the anti-lock brake control module with Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound (D7AZ-19A331-A, or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESE-M10171-A). Be sure the level of grease does not exceed the top of the pins in the anti-lock brake control module.

7. Connect the harness connector to the anti-lock brake control module. Retorque the connection to 4.8 +/- 0.8 N.m (42 +/- 7 lb-in).

8. Locate the two (2) ground eyelets for the anti-lock brake control module on the -14290- harness that attaches to Ground G101. The takeout is Circuit 570 (BK/W). If there is heat shrink on the eyelets, the service is complete. Otherwise, continue with Step 9.

9. Remove the eyelets from G101 by removing the fastener attaching the takeout to G101. Retain the fastener.

10. Remove the black adhesive tape around the eyelets. Discard the tape.

11. Apply solder to the wire crimps of the ground eyelets. Make sure no copper wire strands are exposed.

12. Hold the eyelets so the wire points toward the rear of the vehicle (toward 9 o'clock position) and reattach both eyelets using the fastener removed in Step 9. If the hood switch is present, position as far toward 9 o'clock position as possible without touching the switch bracket. Reattach both eyelets using the fastener removed in Step 9. Torque this connection to 9.0 +/- 1.4 N.m (80 +/- 12 lb-in). The wire must still be pointing toward the rear of the vehicle. Apply Silicone Gasket And Sealant (F7AZ-19554-EA, or equivalent meeting Ford Specification WSE-M4G323-A4) to the wire crimp area of eyelets with the B/W wire

13. The service is now complete.
