WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.

ISSUE:
A stall or no start condition may occur on some vehicles after the engine reaches warm operating temperature and when the ambient temperature is high, the humidity is high and the fuel volatility is low. These symptoms can be improved upon with a revised Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration.

ACTION:
Use the following Service Procedure to determine if a new PCM with a revised calibration is required.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Perform the Diagnostic Procedure in the 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Car/Truck Service Manual. Service as required.

2. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P1358, P1474, and P1478 exist, reprogram the PCM by following the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) reprogramming tool, February 1996 CD-ROM or later. If SBDS is not available, replace the PCM. Dealers with SBDS are required to reprogram the PCM with the appropriate calibration per the Application Chart. Only non-SBDS dealers are permitted to replace the PCM. Refer to the Application Chart for correct calibration or part number.

NOTE:
DEALERS WITH SBDS ARE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN REGIONAL APPROVAL WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM.

3. Perform Step 1 again. If Code P1518 is still present, confirm Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) is functioning properly by performing normal diagnostics in the 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Car/Truck Service Manual. If no codes are present, follow the procedure in Step 2 on reprogramming or replacing the PCM.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
