Step 4
Dynamic Testing - Engine Running

Dynamic testing is the final step in the transmission tester usage. It allows the transaxle to be proven out electronically and hydraulically.

Transaxle Solenoid Cycling and Drive Test
Preliminary Setup

1. Slide MODE switch to DRIVE.
2. Turn GEAR SELECT dial to 1.
3. Vehicle in PARK; parking brake ON.
4. Start engine.

EPC Solenoid

CAUTION: Do not attempt to hold EPC switch depressed (minimum line pressure) and stall the transaxle (holding the vehicle with the brake while depressing the throttle with the transaxle in gear). This will damage the transaxle.

1. Observe line pressure. Record value.
- Line pressure should go to maximum. If not, refer to Diagnosis by Symptom Routine or Pinpoint Test E concerning EPC solenoid.
2. Press EPC switch. Record value.
- Line pressure should drop to a minimum value. If not, refer to Diagnosis by Symptom Routine or Pinpoint Test E concerning EPC solenoid.

Engagements
1. Verify that MODE switch is in DRIVE mode
2. Turn GEAR SELECT dial to 1.
3. Start engine
4. Shift vehicle from PARK to REVERSE.
- Did vehicle shift into REVERSE?
- Was engagement firm?
5. Press EPC switch. Line pressure should drop to idle pressure
While holding EPC switch down, shift vehicle from PARK to REVERSE
- Did vehicle shift into REVERSE?
- Was engagement smooth?
- Shift vehicle from REVERSE to PARK.
- Release EPC switch. Line pressure should rise to MAX pressure
6. Shift vehicle from PARK to DRIVE.
- Did vehicle shift into DRIVE?
- Was engagement firm?
7. Shift vehicle from DRIVE to PARK.
8. Press EPC switch. Pressure should drop to idle pressure.
9. Press EPC Switch. Line pressure should drop to idle pressure. While holding EPC switch down, shift vehicle from PARK to DRIVE.
- Did the vehicle shift from PARK to DRIVE?
- Was the engagement smooth?
10. Release EPC switch.

Upshift / Downshift

Note:

- Upshifts and down shifts will be firm during this procedure.
- Pressure gauges may be removed from vehicle during these tests.
- These tests should be performed on the road. If performed on the hoist, you may not feel all shifts when they engage.
- LEDs will turn GREEN when solenoids activate and turn OFF when deactivated. Refer to the appropriate overlay for proper status/shift sequence of shift solenoids during upshift and downshift.

1. Move shift lever to OVERDRIVE and accelerate to 24 kmh (15 mph). Select second gear by turning GEAR SELECT Dial to 2.
- Did vehicle upshift to second gear?
- Did appropriate shift solenoids activate/deactivate?
2. Accelerate to 40 km/h (25 mph) and select third gear by turning GEAR SELECT dial to 3.
- Did vehicle upshift to third gear?
- Did appropriate shift solenoids activate/deactivate?
3. Accelerate to 56-72 km/h (35-45 mph) and select fourth gear by turning GEAR SELECT dial to 4.
- Did vehicle upshift to fourth gear?
- Did appropriate shift solenoids activate/deactivate?
4. Reverse the order to downshift.
- Did vehicle downshift from fourth to third, third to second, and second to first?

Torque Converter Engagement

Note:
This test should be performed on the road. If performed on a hoist, you may not feel the torque converter clutch engage.

CAUTION: Do not depress TCC switch with transmission in gear and the vehicle at a stop. Damage to torque converter clutch may result.

1. Accelerate and shift vehicle into third gear. Hold speed steady and press the TCC switch.
- Did converter engage?
- Did engine RPM drop?
- Did TCC solenoid activate?
- Did TCC solenoid deactivate when you released switch?

Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor Function Check

Note:
This test may be performed on the hoist or on the road.

1. Set voltmeter to 20 volts AC.
2. Connect voltmeter positive lead to the +TSS.
3. Connect voltmeter negative lead to the -TSS.
4. Slowly accelerate vehicle and monitor voltmeter.
- Did voltage increase with vehicle speed?

After you finish testing, continue to Transmission Tester Removal and Clearing DTCs if testing of the TR Sensor is not required. If testing is required, refer to component testing. Transmission Range (TR) Sensor Testing
