Parking Brake System: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION
^ It has drum-type brake shoes and linings located inside a drum-in-hat style rear disc brake rotor.
^ It is controlled by an independent foot-operated parking brake control which actuates the rear wheel brake shoes and linings through a cable system.
^ The parking brake warning indicator is activated by the parking brake control. It warns the driver to release the parking brake control before driving the vehicle. If the indicator remains lit, a brake malfunction has occurred.
^ It is released either manually or through an automatic vacuum-type parking brake release.

OPERATION
^ The foot-operated parking brake control actuates the rear wheel brake shoes and linings through a cable system. To apply parking brake, press parking brake control downward with foot.
^ The parking brake control lever stroke should be five to seven notches when applied with a pedal effort of 170 N (125 lb).

AUTOMATIC (VACUUM) RELEASE
^ The automatic (vacuum) release-type is standard equipment on all vehicles.
^ Has a parking brake release control motor with mounting bracket attached to the parking brake control
^ Has a vacuum-actuated diaphragm within the parking brake release control motor which is connected by a rod to the upper end of the parking brake release vacuum hose
^ The parking brake release vacuum hose connects the parking brake release control motor to the engine manifold through a vacuum release switch at the steering column tube.
^ The parking brake release control motor is actuated to release the parking brake whenever the engine is running and the transmission is in a forward-driving gear

MANUAL RELEASE
^ A manual release feature that releases the parking brake control when the parking brake release handle is pulled out, is located on the lower LH side of the instrument panel.

BRAKE WARNING SYSTEM
The brake warning indicator:

^ Warns the driver to release the parking brake control before driving the vehicle.
