ISSUE:
Some vehicles may exhibit no temperature control and/or a "clicking" noise may be heard coming from behind the instrument panel near the glove compartment. This may be caused by a broken helical gear within the blend air door actuator.

ACTION:
Replace the blend air door actuator. The revised actuator is more robust and should reduce the possibility of the gear breaking. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Stabilize the vehicle at room temperature (between 4 and 38°C (40 and 100°F)).

2. Enter module self test mode by simultaneously pressing the "OFF" and "FLOOR" buttons, then release and within 2 seconds, push the "AUTO" button.

3. Immediately press the "DEFROST" button to exit and clear any codes that may have been accidentally set.

4. Re-enter the self test mode. The control will display a series of segments for 20 seconds after which all vacuum fluorescent display segments will be displayed if there are no malfunction trouble codes. Record any trouble codes displayed. Exit the test mode by pressing the "DEFROST" button.

5. If a 024 or 025 trouble code is displayed and there was a clicking noise coming from behind the glove compartment area, replace the blend air door actuator. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for replacement procedures.

6. If an 024 or 025 code was displayed, and there was not a clicking noise behind the glove compartment area, then run Pinpoint Test A, "A/C Electronic Blend Door Actuator Inoperative Or Improper Operation," from the 1997 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis or 1997 Town Car Service Manual.

7. If any other trouble codes were displayed, repair as required and retest.
