Compressor HVAC: Service and Repair

When A/C compressor is inoperative due to internal causes, clean the refrigerant system by flushing or filtering to remove any debris or contaminants and prevent damage to the replacement A/C compressor.

Replacement of the suction accumulator/drier is necessary when the A/C compressor is replaced.

The A/C evaporator core orifice should be replaced whenever the A/C compressor is replaced for lack of performance or when there is debris in the system.

REMOVAL
1. Discharge the refrigerant from the system following the recommended service procedures. Observe all safety precautions. Service and Repair
2. Loosen nut retaining A/C compressor to condenser discharge line to stud on engine front cover.
3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
4. Remove six retaining screws and engine splash shield.
5. Disconnect wire harness connectors from crankshaft position sensor and A/C compressor.
6. Disengage wire harness retainer from bracket on A/C compressor and position aside.
7. Remove bolt retaining A/C manifold and tube to A/C compressor and position aside. Cap the A/C manifold and tube and A/C compressor to prevent the entrance of dirt and moisture.
8. Loosen the idler pulley to remove the tension from the A/C compressor drive belt. Remove the drive belt from the A/C clutch pulley.
9. Remove three A/C compressor lower retaining bolts and remove the A/C compressor.
10. Remove bracket from A/C compressor.

INSTALLATION
1. Service the replacement A/C compressor with the correct amount of clean Motorcraft YN-12b refrigerant oil or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B. Service and Repair
2. Install bracket on A/C compressor.
3. Position the A/C compressor to the engine.
4. Install three bolts to retain the A/C compressor to the engine.
5. Lubricate new O-ring seals with clean Motorcraft YN-12b refrigerant oil or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B and position them in O-ring seal grooves of A/C manifold and tube.
6. Apply Pipe Sealant with Teflon D8AZ-19554-A or equivalent meeting Ford specifications WSK-M2G350-AZ and ESR-M18P7-A to threads of manifold retaining bolt.
7. Position A/C manifold and tube with O-ring seals to A/C compressor. Install retaining bolt and tighten to 17-23 N.m (13-16 lb-ft).

NOTE: When replacing an A/C compressor, use original manifold bolt from removed A/C compressor to retain A/C manifold and tube to new A/C compressor. Do not use the shipping cap bolts.

8. Reattach wire harness to bracket and connect wire harness connectors to crankshaft position sensor and A/C compressor.
9. Install six retaining screws and engine splash shield.
10. Tighten nut retaining A/C compressor to condenser discharge line to stud on engine front cover.
11. Install the drive belt on the A/C clutch pulley and adjust the drive belt tension to specification.
12. Leak-test, evacuate and charge the system.
13. Check the system for proper operation.
