Steering Column: Testing and Inspection

1. Check the condition of the steering column to be sure it has not been partially collapsed by a previous impact. Look especially at the steering column mounting bracket and the plastic shear capsules.
2. Check for side play of the steering shaft in the steering column bearings. Any detectable side play can adversely affect steering control. If in excess of 0.75 mm (0.03 inch), serious bearing wear is indicated and the column assembly should be replaced.
